Romuald Twardowski’s Sonata breve, subtitled Igor Stravinsky in memoriam, was written in 1979. The piece clearly references the work of the eminent Russian composer in its musical content, rhythmic motion, and specific use of piano texture. Like the composer of Pulcinella, Romuald Twardowski draws inspiration from European music traditions of centuries gone by. In Sonata breve a contemporary musical language, tinted here and there with traces of tonality, is combined with classicism of form. Thanks to this, the piece is an embodiment of the credo expressed by the composer – the desired synthesis of the New and the Old.
