Journey Variations were created in 1999 as a result of the composer’s fascination with French impressionism, and in particular with the works of Francis Poulenc. The main theme of the work was “born” during a journey, hence the title. The form is constructed around typical neoclassical variations consisting of an opening, presentation of the theme, contrasting variations, and an impressive finale. However, the language of melody and harmony is very much impressionist. The work was written with great awareness of technical capabilities of the guitar, which is why it can certainly be played by music school pupils as well as, taking into account a high level of musical values, be included in the repertoire of music academy students and professional guitarists.
